All regulations for a particular study program are established by the exam regulations (only available in German) for example, which degree it results in or what is required to obtain it. An exam regulation (Prüfungsordnung = PO) remains in force until a new PO is adopted. The new regulation will stipulate transition deadlines within which students are then allowed to complete studies begun under the previous PO.
There are still two outdated degree programs at the University of Stuttgart: the First State Examination for High School Teaching and the Diplom. They pertain to students that began their studies prior to the introduction of the modularized exam regulations.
Termination of study programs under GymPO I for high school teachers
Students planning a teaching career who are studying under the 2009 Exam Regulation GymPO I have until the fall of 2021 to complete their studies. For programs combining subjects in art and music the deadline is extended to the fall of 2022.This applies to state teacher examination candidates who began their studies prior to August 1, 2015. All others are subject to the provisions for Bachelor's and Master's teaching programs.
Implications for GymPO I students
After the deadline passes, state examinations according to GymPO I (2009) can no longer be taken. This matters especially for anyone wishing to change the field of study or add a second subject. In that case, it is important to consult with Student Counseling to ensure that the deadline for the old PO can still be met despite the contemplated changes.
Further information on terminating degree programs can be obtained from the study programs overview pages dealing with the state teacher examination and in a PDF with the transition rules [de] (269 KB).
Termination of the “Diplom“ study programs
Before the switch to Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs existed study programs leading to a Diplom degree. In December 2013, with the statute on deadline adjustments [de] transitional deadline was set for the Diplom study programs.
Most Diplom study programs have already expired. The deadline for the following eight remaining ones is set for March 31, 2017.
The following 'diplom' study programs run until March 31, 2017:
- Geodesy and Geoengineering
- Computer Science
- (Computational-) Linguistics
- Aerospace Engineering
- Software Engineering
- Technical Education
- Technical Biology
Implications for students with the Diplom degree
By the target date, all credits for examinations and make-up exams must have been taken and all research papers, term papers and theses must have been handed in. The time allowed for completion of student papers expires on that date. Therefore, the papers should be submitted in timely fashion before the deadline. Corrections or grading of the respective examination results by examiners can, however, take place after it has passed.
Failure to earn all credits by the March 31, 2017 target date, the termination of the study program will result in de-registration.
After de-registration, you may enroll in a Bachelor’s degree program of the same name or a related one, provided you meet the respective admission requirements. A change directly into a Master’s study program is not feasible.
Our academic advisors are available for providing specific advice regarding such a change if contemplated.
