Key research areas and projects
The WAREM M.Sc. program works closely with the Institute for Modelling Hydraulic and Environmental Systems (IWS) and the Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Solid Waste Management (ISWA), which provide lectures and research topics for master’s theses. With simulations becoming an increasingly vital component of research and water projects, WAREM offers many in-depth elective courses that cover modeling techniques and introduce students to multiple programming languages. Courses combine theory with hands-on learning, thereby allowing students to gain experience applying theoretical concepts by conducting measurements in laboratory and field settings.
Infrastructure for academic studies and research
Most lectures are held at the Vaihingen Campus of the University of Stuttgart. The campus offers modern teaching facilities and well-equipped study spaces as well as access to a wide range of university services.
Because the WAREM program collaborates closely with the Institute for Modelling Hydraulic and Environmental Systems (IWS), the Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Solid Waste Management (ISWA), and the Research Facility for Subsurface Remediation and Geotechnical Engineering (VEGAS), students regularly visit these institutes for laboratory sessions, practical exercises, research projects, and fieldwork. This close integration of teaching and research provides valuable hands-on experience and exposure to real-world water and environmental engineering challenges.
More than studying: opportunities witin the program
Your WAREM journey begins with the annual information and welcome session, where you will meet fellow students, faculty members, and the WAREM team and receive important information about the program and university life.
During the second semester, WAREM typically organizes an annual study excursion related to the academic focus of the program. These excursions provide valuable insights into practical applications of water resources and environmental management while allowing students to connect with industry professionals and researchers.
Beyond academics, the University of Stuttgart offers a vibrant student experience with a wide range of activities, including sports clubs, student societies, cultural events, and recreational opportunities. These activities provide excellent ways to meet new people, develop new skills, and enrich your university experience both on and off campus.
