History of Natural Sciences and Technology - Bachelor's study program

Like all historical disciplines, History of Natural Sciences and Technology works with historical-critical source interpretation and many other methods, such as historical comparison. The study program is characterized by its specific subject matter, not by a particular era. Chronologically, it covers all historical periods from ancient cultures to the 21st century, with a focus on modern times.

As in all humanities subjects, studying History of Natural Sciences and Technology requires a lot of reading, both German and English texts. If you don't like reading, you should probably steer clear of studying a humanities subject. A writing workshop in the History of Natural Sciences and Technology study program supports you in developing your own academic texts.

Technical inventions and scientific discoveries made by “great men” – and “great women” – are covered in this study program. However, the main focus is on other questions: What drove the development of science and technology? How have they changed society? How have technological developments been shaped by societal expectations?

The History of Natural Sciences and Technology is not a substitute for studying journalism, but the program equips you with the skills to acquire, analyze, and communicate scientific and technical knowledge and its historical development, both orally and in writing. You can regularly gain initial writing experience and often even publication experience in project seminars.

Graduates of the study program are strongly networked internationally. Knowledge of English, is therefore very important for studying the history of natural sciences and technology. Conversely, by the end of your studies, you will find it much easier to deal with English texts. You will therefore acquire or consolidate a key skill for any profession.

Typical employers for graduates include cultural institutions (museums and archives, broadcasting companies, foundations, university collections), publishing houses, and companies. So there is a wide range of interesting activities to look forward to, but if you want to earn as much money as possible with as little effort as possible, this is not the place for you.

No in-depth scientific knowledge is required, and you don't have to have been a math whiz at school! What you need is an interest in technology and/or natural sciences and the willingness to acquire the necessary technical or scientific background knowledge on a historical topic, as well as other background knowledge.
