The aim of the “Mobility of the Future” innovation campus is to produce new and pioneering technology through excellent fundamental research in the fields of mobility and production. As part of the project, professors from Stuttgart and Karlsruhe in the areas of Automotive Engineering, Product Development, Production Engineering, Chemistry, Materials, Electrical Engineering, Aircraft Design and Machine Tools are working together. Moreover, other universities and research institutes from Baden-Württemberg can get involved with the projects depending on the topic.
The state of Baden-Württemberg is funding the “Mobility of the Future” (ICM) [de] innovation campus between the University of Stuttgart and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The Ministry of Science of Baden-Württemberg is making the ICM a focus as part of its “Strategic Dialog for the Automotive Sector”[de].

Pilot projects in emission-free drive systems and additive manufacturing
The first two pilot projects deal with emission-free drive systems and additive manufacturing, meaning the use of 3D printers other than for high-quality and ready-for-use (lightweight) building components. The University of Stuttgart and the KIT are pooling their skills together here to devise new forms of mobility, flexible production technologies and future value-creation networks, and to carry about research across disciplines.
The focus is on the vision of digital production based on completely flexible production technology on the one hand. This makes it possible for products to be manufactured locally at short notice if necessary, in a way which is high-quality, cheap, and in small quantities where desired. On the other hand, additive processes can make drive systems more fuel-efficient, because they help save on weight, assembly space, materials and energy or combine the functionalities of different components.
Zero-emission vehicles and mobility concepts which exploit the potential offered by digitization lead to greater efficiency in terms of resources and space on the road. By means of prototypes, e.g. safe, smart, comfortable, single-seater commuter mobiles for short distances, the concepts of the first phase will be validated and demonstrated. The focuses of the subsequent phases will be identified together with the scientists involved, external experts, and by setting up a think tank.

The focus of the innovation campus for mobility is on quickly and flexibly testing out entirely new approaches, in keeping with the motto “fail fast and often”. It aims to identify the fields that will be important in the future, create spaces where people can work together and an innovative start-up culture, promote young talents, and integrate research in Baden-Württemberg.
