“Human resource development and organisation development - do good scientists need that?”, respectable representatives of academic disciplines may ask, when issues of promoting young researchers’ careers or even developing higher education institutes and departments are under discussion. In disciplines doing research on exactly such questions we know that researchers develop better and more successfully, if they are supported by professional offers under the heading of academic career development. And academic organisations can profit from professional counselling and assistance in the management of change processes. Everyone of us working as researcher and teacher remembers difficult situations, e.g. in lectures or courses, in student consultation, during examinations, collegial meetings, subject discussions, or when applying for research funds, which ended less successfully than hoped for. Academic career and organisation development offers demand driven support to enhance and extend the knowledge and skills for the manifold tasks and responsibilities of scientists. Today, the success of scientists depends more than ever on excellence not only in subject matter but in all fields of professional action, which comprise:
- organizing and further developing one’s own career, for example by reflecting one’s standing as researcher, networking in the research and practice community, deciding on strategies for publishing research, accompanied by a well organised time management;
- arranging and implementing educational settings and academic courses which support learning and follow defined objectives, for example by reflecting didactical principles and professional standards of higher education as is offered in “Fit for Teaching”;
- moderating, organizing, leading and developing research staff and project teams;
- project and research management concerning, for example, how and where to apply for research funding, financial management and budgeting, dealing with law and human resource issues, up to strategies for developing one’s discipline and academic institutions.
The project “Academic Career and Organisation Development” in the Excellence Cluster SimTech and the graduate school NUPUS is situated at the Center for Teaching and Further Education (ZLW, head Dr. Edith Kroeber ), because the center pools several competences to organize and realise workshops and support in management, teaching, and multidisciplinary issues of research organisation and communication. For offers exceeding the given competences, e.g. concerning specific research tasks, financial and legal issues, the center employs experts and trainers, who already proved competent and appropriate for our addressees in former co-operations.
Decisions about content and formats of the offers are made in close consultation and agreement with members of the SimTech management team, Julia Ackermann, and NUPUS management team, Maria Costa, and are based on recurrent needs analyses. Besides offers for groups individuals and teams can request consultation or training for specific questions and occasions. To set up support measures in the long term, which not only fit the needs but are also effective, the project of academic career and organisation development includes the scientific development of it’s concepts, e.g. by empirical tests of effects.
