Entrance Examination according to §58 Abs. 5 Landeshochschulgesetz (University Law)
(Aufnahmeprüfung, former Special Admissions Procedure)
In certain study programs with special requirements so called Entrance Examinations (formerly Special Admissions Procedures) have to be passed. An applicant's distinctive aptitude and motivation for his or her chosen course will be ascertained with a system of aptitude tests. Any applicant failing to pass the minimal requirements will be excluded from the entry procedure. This also applies for study programs without entry restrictions.
The Entrance Examination according to §58 Abs. 5 Landeshochschulgesetz (University Law) is not always a real examination! It is a selection procedure and quite different depending on your chosen study program. The procedure ranges from evaluation of documents submitted in writing (school and extracurricular achievements and qualifications, professional experience) to interviews or to tests checking the ability to study. Please check the criteria of your chosen study program to learn about the determined procedure.
Who has to participate in the Entrance Examination?
All applicants - regardless of their nationality or the country of origin of their school leaving certificates - have to participate. Applicants who wish to change from another study program to a study program for which an Entrance Examination exists, are also required to participate. Applicants who already have studied in a similar course at another university are not required to participate, if they have passed the intermediate exams ("Vordiplom" or "Zwischenprüfung") of their studies.

Local Admissions Restrictions and University Internal Admissions System
(Hochschuleigenes Auswahlverfahren - HAV)
Non-EU nationals do not fall under the University Internal Admissions System. For these applicants, another admission system exists for study programs with Local Admissions Restrictions. Please read the following pages carefully:
Application Information for International Degree Seeking Students.
EU-nationals are treated equally to German nationals - Please consult the following information as well as the German pages:
Aufnahmeprüfung und Hochschulauswahlverfahren [de].
Who has to participate in the University Internal Admittance system?
Applicants who are German, of EU-nationality and all applicants with a German school leaving certificate (Abitur), regardless of their nationality, have to participate in the University internal admittance system. In some cases nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are treated as EU-nationals.
If you fear you will not gain admittance to a course with entry restrictions, you should use the supplementary application (Hilfsantrag) which is part of your application form. With this supplementary application you should apply for a related course without entry restrictions. If you supplementarily apply for a study program requiring an Entrance Examination, you must take part in this Entrance Examination as well. In this case, please consider the appointed dates. Another possibility is to apply at another university as well.
The Student Counselling Center of the Universität Stuttgart will advise you on possible alternatives.

Special Admission into Master's programs
All master's programs have special admission criteria. A Bachelor's or an equivalent degree is usually only one of several conditions. In addition to the proof of a minimum grade of the bachelor's degree these requirements might be admission tests or interviews, in which you have to take part. Please consult the admission statutes (Zulassungsordnungen) and the websites of the study programs for the detailed admission requirements and procedure.
