Language requirements and work experience
In some subjects it is necessary or recommended to have gained work experience or additional language skills before admission. Applicants are advised to inform themselves about language requirements or compulsory work experience by consulting the individual websites of the study program or by the table of study subjects listed above.
Admission restrictions
There are admission restrictions for most of the study programs at the Universität Stuttgart
(marked with a Z in the table of study subjects [de]). This means that there is only a limited
number of places for that particular course. Around 8-10% of places are available to foreign
applicants. The places are allocated primarily on the basis of qualifications – as evidenced by the
school-leaving certificate and grades from any previously completed course of study.

Entrance Examination (former special admissions pocedures)
In some courses at the Universität Stuttgart, Entrance Examinations are used (courses marked
with an A in the table of subjects). The examination is intended to ascertain the
particular suitability and motivation of the students for the chosen subject. Applicants who do not
fulfill the minimum requirements for this examination are not admitted to the examination. All
applicants – regardless of their citizenship or country of origin – must take part in this
examination.
The Entrance Examination according to §58 Abs. 5 Landeshochschulgesetz (University Law) is
not always a real examination! It is a selection procedure and quite different depending on
your chosen study program. The procedure ranges from evaluation of documents submitted in
writing (school and extracurricular achievements and qualifications, professional experience) to
interviews or to tests checking the ability to study. Please check the criteria of your
chosen study program to learn about the procedure of your chosen study program.
In some subjects (see also the criteria in the supplementary application form) it is possible
for applicants to be exempted from the Entrance Examination if their results in their previous
studies – usually a preliminary or intermediate exam – are accredited as being sufficient. However,
as the accreditation of results only takes place after applications have been submitted, all
applicants should submit the relevant and necessary documents and take part in the tests (during
July and August).
The criteria for the Entrance Examination vary from subject to subject. As a rule, the
deadline for applications for this Entrance Examination is the same as for the actual course
itself, either 15 July or 15 January. Exceptions are for example: Social Sciences (German-French)
with May 15th as deadline.
The latest information on the courses, criteria and deadlines, as well as the necessary
documents you must submit can be found on the following websites:

with complete information on the admission requirements and the admission procedure [de]
All master's programs have special admission criteria. A Bachelor's or an equivalent degree is usually only one of several conditions. In addition to the proof of a minimum grade of the bachelor's degree these requirements might be admission tests or interviews, in which you have to take part. Please consult the admission statutes (Zulassungsordnungen) and the websites of the study programs for the detailed admission requirements and procedure.
The University of Stuttgart offers seven M.Sc. programs which are taught in English. Students do
not need to know German when embarking on these programs, German lessons are included. Applications
forms, deadlines and instructions need to be obtained from the websites of the particular courses.
Students are advised to check the websites of the programs themselves.
Information on the international English-language Masters programs can be found on the web
