Obligatory re-examinations / oral examinations (Examination Regulations § 20)

  • If an examination was failed, it has to be registered and taken again within 2 semesters. In up to 2 cases, a second re-examination is possible.
  • After a failed re-examination, an oral re-examination takes place, which can only be graded as pass (= 4.0) / fail (= 5.0).
  • If an obligatory re-examination is not registered or taken, the missed examination is graded as failed. In case of a missed examination, a possible oral re-examination is cancelled.

Certifications available at the Examination Office

  • The administrative employee responsible for the degree program at the Examination Office can issue a Certificate of Graduation as soon as 120 – 123 credit points have been acquired. Even before the final grading of the Master´s Thesis, the supervisor of the thesis can confirm that it will be graded at least with a 4.0 and has therefore been passed (per 0 Certification). 120 - 123 credit points can therefore be achieved even before the final grade of the Master´s Thesis is known.
  • Certifications of other universities are completed by the administrative employee responsible for the degree program at the Examination Office or by the Board of Examiners.
  • The Examination Office can also issue a certification stating that the right to take examinations in a certain degree program has not been lost, which can be submitted to other universities. (Unbedenklichkeitsbescheinigung)
  • Other certifications can be issued upon request.
  • Please contact the BAföG representative of the respective institute (see Course Catalog) for certifications for the BAföG office.

Master‘s Thesis (Examination Regulations § 25)

  • The Master’s Thesis can be registered as soon as 72 credit points have been acquired and the student research project must be submitted.
  • On the registration form, the Examination Office also has to confirm that you fulfill all requirements for registering your thesis, i.e. that you have acquired all necessary credit points.
  • Please use the following form to register for the Master’s thesis (LINK)
  • After the Examination Office has confirmed that you fulfill all requirements, please fill in the form with your examiner and submit it to the Examination Office. The examiner has to fill in the date the topic was allocated. The form has to be signed by the student and the examiner, the signature of the Examination Board is not necessary.
  • The completion period starts the day the topic is assigned and lasts 6 months.

Complimentary attempt regulation (Examination Regulations § 26)

  • Complimentary attempts are possible if 48 credit points have been achieved by the end of the 2nd semester.
  • Up to 1 examinations taken and passed once can be repeated to improve the grade. The examination has to be taken by the first or second examination date after the passed examination, and only the better grade is counted, regardless of whether or not the grade was improved.
  • Up to 1 examination taken and failed once can be deleted. Thereby, a second re-examination is possible or a module can be deleted completely, so that a new module choice can be made.

Additional Modules (Examination Regulations § 22) (Zusatzmodule)

  • Up to four additional modules can be included in the Final Grade Report (please indicate on the registration form). The grades of the additional modules are not included in the calculation of the final grade. Please inform the administrative employee responsible for your degree program at the Examination Office of the registration, so that it can be recorded as an add on module in the system.
  • Required modules can be taken as often as necessary, but have to be passed by the time the Master’s thesis has to be registered. Otherwise, the admission to the degree program expires and the student is deregistered.
  • If the required modules are not displayed on your logon screen, please contact the administrative employee responsible for your degree program at the Examination Office, so that the required modules can be activated. Please note that no registrations are possible after the registration period, not even in this case.
