Welcome to the Institute of Regional Development Planning!

Our natural and built environment changes constantly. This spatial development is a complex interrelationship of economic, ecological, cultural, social, demographic, political and civic processes. Spatial planning aims to achieve a balance between these different and sometimes conflicting interests. Spatial development takes place at different scales from city and regional to national and global level, encompassing various sectors such as environment, landscape, settlement, transport and infrastructure. Spatial research examines the conditions, processes, procedures, contradictions and problems that are associated with spatial planning and development.

IREUS houses an interdisciplinary team of geographers, spatial and urban planners, economists and urban researchers, and is dedicated to research and teaching in the topics mentioned above. Empirically based and result oriented, urban and regional research conducted in the institute is related to the goal of sustainable spatial development, understood as resource efficient, socially just and economically stable development.
