On the 11.06.2017 shortly before his 90th birthday died Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr.h.c. Klaus Linkwitz, former director of the Institute for Applications of Geodesy in Construction (IAGB), now Institute for Engineering Geodesy, the University of Stuttgart.

Klaus Linkwitz was born in Bad Oeynhausen/Westphalia and took up his studies in geodesy in Stuttgart and Munich upon completion of school, military service, captivity and internship.

He began working as a graduate engineer for a large construction company with large-scale projects in various Asian countries.  Having completed his doctoral thesis in Munich (1960), he worked as member of the executive board of an engineering office until he was appointed professor of the newly established chair ‘Institute for Applications of Geodesy to Engineering’.

At an early stage, he came in contact with Professor Frei Otto and thus with the ‘Lightweight Structures’.  He and his institute were significantly involved in the planning of the Olympic Stadium roofs in Munich in 1972 by developing new methods for its computational form-finding and analysis. These methods could be further developed into workable procedures within the Collaborative Research Centre ‘Long-span surface structures’. Even today as an emeritus he is regularly giving lectures on this subject as well as guest lectures in many different countries.

Apart from that, during his professorship his focus was on the varied field of engineering surveying, and his teaching and research activities were always accompanied by practical engineering projects.  Within the university he had an integrating impact in many committees and interdisciplinary projects.  For example, for decades he was Chairman of the Student Services association and from 1984 until 1995 speaker of the Collaborative Research Centre ‘High-precision navigation’.
