Important Organizations
  • INFOTECH has, to a large extend, its own organizations, mirroring central University functions.
  • The main University functions are the Office of Student Affairs ('Studierendensekretariat') and the Office of International Affairs ('Akademisches Auslandsamt'). 
  • The INFOTECH functions (which have a counterpart in the general University administration) are
    • The INFOTECH OFFICE, which is your premier support function, with its sub functions
      • INFOTECH Office of Examinations
      • INFOTECH Office of Internship
      • INFOTECH Office of Admissions

Admission
  • The admission to INFOTECH somewhat differs from that of other students at the University of Stuttgart. INFOTECH has its own admission process, for details use this link.
  • Once you have been admitted (Official Letter of the University), this admittance allows you to register - University Registration, 'Einschreibung'.

University Registration

  • Each and every student needs to register with the University (Einschreibung, Immatrikulation) with the  - Studierendensekretariat'
  • Then every semester you need to re-register  yourself. This may be denied if the program you are in has informed the administration of the University, that you have lost the right for further study in the program.
  • At the end of the program you have to de-register yourself ('Exmatrikulation').

University (German) Marking/Grading System

  • The University Marking System uses marks from 1.0 to 4.0 and 5.0, with 1.0 being the best. Intermediate values as .3 and .7 may be used, for Master Thesis also .1, .2. A marking of  5.0 is equal to  "FAIL" mark. Markings (Grades) are given as verbal/numerical Grades:
    • Very Good (1.0 to 1.5)
    • Good (1.6 to 2.5)
    • Satisfactory (2.6 to 3.5)
    • Sufficient (3.6 to 4.0)
    • Not-Suffcient (5.0) - Not shown in final Transcript of Examination>/li>
  • At the end the final transcript will show an 'overall average' which is equal to a GPA and calculated according to the formula Sum of (CreditPoints*Marking)/Sum of Credit Points, with the markings/grades:
    • Very Good with Distinction (1.0 to 1.2)
    • Very Good (1.3 to 1.5)
    • Good (1.6 to 2.5)
    • Satisfactory (2.6 to 3.5)
    • Sufficient (3.6 to 4.0)

Major (Focus,Specialization)

  • You have to select your major prior to the Counseling Interview (CoIn). The major determines the list of Modules available. Non-Technical courses, Lab, Seminar and Mster Thesis are equal for all majors.

Examinations

  • Seen from the perspective of the study regulation anything which receives a marking is an examination, e.g. an exam related to a course/exercise, the lab course, the seminar and the Master Thesis (MT).
  • Pass marks (i.e. marks between 1.0 and 4.0) are necessary in order that these exams can be credited towards your Master Examination account. The study regulation tells how many or which exams (e.g. Basic Modules, Core Modules, Lab, Seminar) or how many credit points are necessary to pass the Master Examination, see  Curriculum and the special information on the First Study Term
  • There are three types of Examinations
    • Lecture-related Exams. Typically the examinations are held after the lecture course during the Spring or Fall lecture break as written or oral examination.
      • To receive a marking, the lecture related examinations have to be registered with the INFOTECH Office of Examinations - except those for Basic Modules.
      • All lecture course related exams have to be registered at the INFOTECH Office of Examinations during the 'Exam Registration Week'. The dates are published in the News Ticker and on the 'Important Dates' page. 
      • Exam registrations for lecture related exams can be Cancelled until 7 days before the exam.
      • If an exam attempt is marked as 'FAILED' or 'EXEMPTED' (medical certificate necessary), it has to be repeated the next possible date - in most cases the next semester - and becomes a REPEAT ATTEMPT. REPEAT ATTEMPTS have to be registered like first time attempts, however cancellations are NOT possible. 
        • Each Failed exam can be repeated one (1) time, in a total of two (2) cases also two (2) times. Exempted cases do not count.
    • Labs and Seminars
      • Labs and Seminars have to be registered with the Institute offering it. Typically two weeks after start these registrations are collected by the INFOTECH Office of Examinations from the Institutes and registered as exam. After that time, these exam registrations cannot be cancelled anymore.
      • The statements on 'Fail', 'Repeat' and 'Muktiple Repeats' as given on 'Lecture Related Exams' apply as well
    • Master Thesis Projects
      • Master Thesis Projects have to registered with the institute offering it. In all cases, even if the project is actually done outside the faculty, the first examiner  has to be one of the 'INFOTECH' professors, for a list see list of professors
      • Master Thesis Projects have to registered with the INFOTECH Office of Examinations any time but latest 2 weeks after start.
      • The Master Thesis Topic can be returned within the first four (4) weeks without any consequences.They can be repeated once.
    • Students have to sign a Learning Agreement (LA) at the end of each term to fix what exams have been passed or registered for examination. The LA is set up during the CoIn Meeting , see also the special page on the INFOTECH First Term

    These precise regulations are in force for winter term 2010/11 and the fall 2011 exam break and further. Important new statements are underlined.

Industrial Internship/ German Language Proficiency

  • Industrial Internship is considered as admission requirement, however can be postponed until start of Master Thesis project. Industrial Internship is an University external task. Previous work experience can be recognized for Internship, or Industrial Internship can be done - typically - after the 3rd INFOTECH term. The current study regulation requires a minimum of 3 months of Internship, however the actual duration is individual and will be agreed upon by the student and the INFOTECH Office.
  • Proof of German Language Proficiency on A1 level is considered as admission requirement, however the proof can be postponed until start of Master Thesis project. it is recommended to attend the German Class in September upfront to the first term in order to acquire the proof, is needed.

Master Thesis

  • The Master Thesis (MT) project of  6 months is the last piece of work, and one of the most important, of your study program. Master Thesis Topics are issued by one of the INFOTECH Professors, which are listed under the respective link.
  • External Master Thesis are not possible. However, the Master Thesis issued by one of the INFOTECH professors may be part of an industry related project and you may spent part of your time at an industry location.
  • Besides the procedures applied by the issuing party, MT have to be registered with the INFOTECH Office of Examinations. This can be done any time in advance or latest two weeks after the start date. Please visit the Office to receive the MT Registration Form.  The field 'Date of Issue' has to be filled in and signed by the MT supervisor or tutor, the field 'Last Date of Delivery' by the supervisor/tutor and signed by you. It should be reminded, that the time for a MT is 6 month. The form has to be returned to the Office to register the MT. All other actions are then handled by the Examiner (The MT professor) and the Office.
  • The Master Thesis can be returned within the first 4 weeks without any consequences. Premature termination of a MT after that time is formally possible but may be considered as an offence. Not neglecting the fact that a MT can be repeated once, this is considered as extreme case under very special conditions.
  • Please be reminded, that a MT can be started officially only after passing all examinations (and having finished the Internship). Pending examinations may be tolerated on request, if the topic is not related to the MT. Pending repeat examinations do not allow to start the MT.
