Application for Admission - Requirements

Applicants typically have a qualifying Bachelor degree in a qualifying field of a regular study time of 4-years (some exceptions apply) and fulfill a number of other basic requirements in order to be eligible for admission.  Based on the type and place of the first level (undergraduate) degree, different requirements might be in place. Requirements are:
1) Bachelor Degree and Study Duration
For applicants with non-European first level degree (UC=NE)
  • (1) Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree or similar, e.g. BTech, BE, BCS, BCA but not B.A. Master degrees do not qualify.
  • (2) with 4-years regular study time see also FaQ No9
For applicants with European (including German) first level degreey (UC=E)
  • (1a) Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree or similar, e.g. BTech, BE, BCS, BCA but not B.A. or
  • (1b) Diploma Degree from an university of one of the European Union member states. Master degrees do not qualify.
  • (2) 3 to 4 years regular study time
For applicants with German (Fach)-Hochschule/Berufsakademie (Duale Hochschule) Degrees (UC=E)
  • (1) Bachelor/Diplom Abschluss einer deutschen (Fach)hochschule oder Berufsakademie (Duale Hochschule), deren Abschlüsse denen einer Staatlichen Hochschule gleichgestellt sind
  • (2) entfällt

2) Awarding University/Higher Educational Institution
The degrees of the awarding institution have to be recognized without restrictions. The institution need to have a 'Status' of 'H+' in the externer Link anabin database of the standing conference of the German Ministers of Education. A status of 'H+/-' or 'H-' excludes acceptance for admission.
3) Study Field
Fields like computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering (communications), electronics engineering or automation.
4) GPA Requirements
The Cumulative Grade Point Average/Overall Average (CGPA) should be not lower than (value/best on scale)
  • 70%/100%
  • 2.8/4
  • 3.5/5
  • 12/20
  • 2.5/1.0 (for German Marks or international marks converted to German marks)
However it should be noted that values lower than 80%,3.2/4, 4/5, 14/20 have a difficult stand in the international competition for seats. In all cases the academic admission commission INFOTECH evaluates the finishing (overall) grades/marks of the degree examination and decides.
Remark: It is requested to always use original marks/grades, never a conversion to German grades should be used.
5) English Proficiency
All students will be required to show proof of a working knowledge of the English language. Accepted proofs are:
  • TOEFL PBT 550 points
  • TOEFL CBT 213 points
  • TOEFL IBT 80 points  TOEFL
  • IELTS band 6.0 or better
  • Cambridge ESOL CAE/CPE University of Cambride ESOL exams
  • MoI (If the undergraduate studies have been held in English language, it is sufficient to provide a certification from the university).
6) German Proficiency (GP) and Industrial Experience (II)
Notwithstanding the fact, that the entire program is in English, students have to show a proof of basic German knowledge (typically at A1 level) to finish successfully the program. Proof is needed to be presented latest before starting the Master Thesis project (typically after 3rd or 4th term).Options are:
  • Certified attendance at German language classes offered by recognized institution in home country (e.g Goethe Institut)
  • Attendance of the free-of-charge German Intensive Class offered by this university in September, upfront to the first lecture term
  • Private, charged lectures during the program at external institutions like 'Volkshochschule'
  • Proof waived for UC=E applicants, provided they have the German nationality or their secondary school education was in German language
Proof of Industrial Experience is needed to be presented latest before starting the Master Thesis project (typically after 3rd or 4th term).Options are:
  • Industrial work done before joining the program, testimony is neeed
  • Industrial Internship performed during a break typically after the 3rd study term at a company in Germany or abroad
7) Special, Country-Dependent Requirements
  • China, Mongolia and Vietnam
    Certificate from the APS ("Akademische Prüfstelle") in Peking for step 2. Further information in   externer Link English.
  • Islamic Republic of Iran
    Certificate of country-wide university entry exam - Konkour (in step 2)
