Flat to Form: Rapidly Deployable Grid Shell Domes

The construction of the Mannheim Multihall in 1975 showed that it is possible to construct large, open halls by building flat, rectangular grids, overlapping each other, which then are raised resulting in a structurally optimized shape, a grid shell. The grid shell's geometry minimizes the bending stresses thus permitting the use of diverse materials. However, during the erection process the joints have to fulfill specific requirements, such as tolerating the nodes turning in the grid's plane. Whereas after completion, the same nodes have to withstand all bending and tension stresses without deformation.

Research aimed at manipulating the pattern of the flat grid to achieve a simple connection of the nodes in order to simplify and accelerate the construction process.

It is essential to understand the mechanical stress components in a tissue structure to generate a similar tissue in vivo from in vitro cultivated cells. Together with the Institute of Anatomy, Tübingen, the aim of this interdisciplinary research project was the development of an apparatus to apply loads to three-dimensional cell cultures and tissues and thus – using a microscope – determine vital material parameters of the tissues. With the use of a three-dimensional visualization the morphological behavior of cells under mechanical stress was examined.

The objective of this research project was the investigation of so-called branding in the automotive industry, increasingly important as a means of creating a unique brand identity. Corporate architecture represents a medium for imparting brand values that provides a three-dimensional, spatial brand experience. Particularly when it comes to the car as a lifestyle product, its original function as a means of transportation is gradually becoming of secondary importance. In actual fact, customers are also looking to purchase lifestyle fantasies, sensuous values and social prestige. For this reason corporate architecture is eminently capable of aesthetically satisfying these diffuse customer desires with tangible values in the real sense and thereby playing a key role in creating a more intimate form of customer loyalty.

This research project dealt with the development of an expert system to record the structural condition of federal engineering structures and the future maintenance measures as well as the relevant strategies. The focus was on the development of individual modules such as damage profiles, modules to determine the point of intervention, catalogues of maintenance measures and strategies as well as modules for optimizing maintenance measures for specific buildings.
