English photographer, employed by the British Museum as photographer 1854-1858. In mid-1858, the trustees considered Fenton's employment an unnecessary luxury and decided that no further objects at the museum should be photographed. In 1847 Fenton, together with other photographers, formed the Calotype Club, the first photographic club in England. In the 1850's he went to Russia to photograph Kiev, St Petersburg and Moscow, and was the official photographer of the Crimean War (in 1855), where he produced 360 photographs under extremely trying conditions. In 1853/54, R. F. was a founder and first secretary of the London Photographic Society (now the Royal Photographic Society). Later, Fenton was official photographer to the Royal Family. Fenton’s last public showing was in 1862 Intern.
