Welcome to the Database of Illustrators, courtesy of the Section for History of Science & Technology in the History Department of Stuttgart University!

The fully functioning database now already covers more than 7000 entries of scientific, medical or technical illustrators from 70 countries world-wide. The illustrators listed have been active in such fields as natural history, geology or mineralogy, botany or zoology, geography or cartography, anatomy and dermatology, architecture, engineering, technology etc. Please note that we explicitly exclude currently living illustrators and limit our DSI database to illustrators already active before 1950. Our extensive search algorithm is freely available, but the build-up of the DSI search page only works if you have a reasonably fast internet connection and sufficiently large working memory. Once the full search window has built up on your screen, you can either search globally or in individual search fields - please erase your search terms before your next search!
Hover over any blue table header in the search subpage to see a description of the search field in question!
