1. Regulation of the Procedures of the Oral Ph. D. exam in the Faculty of Chemistry
The promotion committee of the faculty of chemistry has decided that promotions within the department will be conducted in the following way.
The oral Ph. D. exam takes place immediately after a twenty minute presentation, which is open to members of the university, in which the candidate explains the concepts of his dissertation as well as the essential results. In the oral examination, which is lasting between one and two hours, and is not open to the public the candidate has to prove that he has in depth knowledge in the area of his dissertation. This is supposed to happen in an exam conversation with the main examiner, the co-examiner and an additional examiner in another subject, which is usually connected to the subject of the dissertation. The dean can appoint the examiner in the additional subject or another professor of the department to be the head of the examination committee.
To enable the candidate to obtain in depth knowledge in the examination subjects, he or she is supposed to hand in an application with the proposal about the persons in the examination committee, this application has to be handed in at least half a year before the expected date of the oral exam. The application has to be signed by the supervising professor. The application has to contain an exposé about the dissertation (about 1 page) and a CV. These documents have to be handed in to the dean´s office (opening times 10.00 - 11.30 AM). If a german diploma or eqivalent examination does not exist, the application for building the examination committee can only be discussed, if the examination office has confirmed the application. The dean's office checks the application before the session of the promotion committee, where the proposal is discussed. The promotion committee can accept or reject the proposal and appoint other examiners. Immediately after the determination of the examiners the candidate obtains the information about the examiners on the committee from the dean´s office or the supervising professor and introduces himself to all examiners as soon as possible.
After the completion of the dissertation the candidate hands in the necessary documents at the examination office and registers at the dean´s office on presentation of his dissertation. If the promotion documents are completely available to the dean´s office (dissertation (hardback) and dissertation file), the promotion committee makes the final decision about the composition of the examination committee. Only in well reasoned cases the deviation from the preliminary composition is possible.
The candidate gives a copy of his work to each of the members of the examination committee. The main examiner and the co examiners make a report and send the original of the report to the dean´s office.
The co examiner gives a copy of his report to the main examiner. If both reports are available to the deans office, the candidate arranges an appointment with the determined examination committee for the oral examination and he/she books a lecture room. This date and the room have to be known to the dean´s office at least 16 days before the arranged date of the examination.
The chairman of the respective examination committee picks up the promotion file with the reports after the end of the 14 day display period at the dean´s office.
The oral examination takes place directly after the presentation (after the public has been excluded) in the same room in which the presentation took place. The promotion documents are handed back to the dean´s office after the examination.
2. Rules for the Dissertation
The dissertation work has to comprise a summary in foreign or german language with a normal size of 2 - 5 pages, but 10 pages as a maximum. For details see the german pages.
